Medical Laboratory Technician

Department: Clinical
Location: Charleston , SC

As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will perform routine in-house testing for Rheumatology practices within the Southeastern Rheumatology Alliance at our laboratory located in Charleston (West Ashley), South Carolina. You will be responsible for day-to-day operations in the laboratory, performing chemistry, hematology, and immunology (ELISA) lab tests. Laboratory hours are Tuesday-Friday 8AM – 5PM with an occasional half-day rotating Saturday shift.

Minimum Qualifications: Associate’s degree in a related science field and equivalent work experience. Must have current MLT certification (ASCP or AMT).

Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related science field and 2 years of clinical lab experience. Must have current MLT or MLS certification (ASCP or AMT).

*Experience with Abbott Alinity, Sysmex XN and/or Dynex Agility analyzers is a plus. LIS experience preferred and experience using Orchard Harvest LIS is a plus.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Match LIS orders with specimens, review specimen quality, and keep an organized and clean workspace.
  • Perform calibration, quality control, linearity, and proficiency testing to ensure accurate analysis. Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.
  • Ability to understand and interpret test results for approval. Able to identify and communicate critical or abnormal results to lab manager, physician, or medical assistant.
  • Create a standardized and safe work environment by following SOPs and complying with regulations. Perform proper record keeping and communicate information with regards to CLIA standards and HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to follow directions and perform work accurately. Communicate professionally in the lab and when responding to email or phone inquiries.
  • Must be proficient with computer skills and using the LIS.
  • Collaborate as part of the lab team, maintaining a positive and professional attitude while being friendly and helpful to staff members.
  • Ability to multi-task at times while prioritizing workload under changing laboratory conditions.
  • Unpack and appropriately store lab inventory items. Notify lab manager when inventory or lab supply items need ordered.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly standing, sitting, and walking.
  • Intermittent grasping, reaching, kneeling, and bending.
  • Lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Repeated use of computer, keyboard, and phone.
